Anxiety in Older Adults
Generalized anxiety disorder is a common psychiatric disorder in
older adults.  Its symptoms include chronic worry, anxiety, and other
problems such as muscle tension, sleep disturbance and fatigue.  In
the past, treatment for anxiety in older adults included sedatives such
as Valium or Xanax, and there has been concern about the safety of
use of such medications in this population.

The study also reported that people with high blood pressure who
were taking Lexapro had a significant decrease in blood pressure
suggesting some additional health-related benefits for older adults
receiving treatment.

Lexapro is in a class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin
reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).  These drugs are approved for treating
anxiety.  Although these researchers used Lexapro, other SSRI’s are
believed to be able to produce the same beneficial effect.

Douglas Mennin, assistant professor of psychology at Yale University,
advises that healthcare professionals be alert to anxiety problems
among older patients.  He attributes the increase in anxiety symptoms
to older adults being faced with “increasingly stressful situations,
such as loss of friends, mobility and job”, and that anxiety can be a
natural result of such situations.

Of course, before taking any medication, please consult with your
doctor.
For more information on anxiety, visit the U.S. National Institute of
Mental Health.
According to a study published in the Jan. 21
issue of the Journal of the American Medical
Association, older adults with Generalized
Anxiety Disorder treated with the
antidepressant medication, Lexapro showed
improvement in symptoms.
